2nd grade homeschool plan, week 10

Dropping e before -ing and -ed · Adding with regrouping · Living and nonliving

Week 10 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: drop the e, when a word ends in silent e, drop the e before -ing or -ed: make, making; smile, smiled. Words to read and spell: making, baking, smiled, hoped, riding, shining, danced and waved. Sight words: “been” and “before”. The new story is “Three Rocks in a Shoebox”, and the reread is “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse”.

Writing: A true story with a strong beginning. A strong first sentence makes a reader want more: a sound, a question, or a moment of action. Your child tries two beginnings and keeps the better one.

Math: Adding with regrouping. Adding two-digit numbers when the ones make a new ten, with blocks first and then on paper.

Science: Living and nonliving. Living things grow, need food and water, and make more of their kind; rocks, toys and water do not.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Near and far. Words that tell where things are, like near, far, left, right, above and below, and how far places are from home.

Read-alouds: “Dinosaurs Are Still Here”, “Three Rocks in a Shoebox”, “Eight Arms”, “Tadpoles in a Jar” and “The Frog Prince”.

For the whole family: Sort a pile of things from around the house and yard into living, once living, and never living.
