Day 50 of 180 · Science: Living and nonliving · Social studies: Near and far · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

  1. Reread “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “been” and “before”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

Does it hook a listener?

  1. Read your story aloud and change the beginning if it doesn't make a listener want more.
  2. A strong first sentence makes a reader want more: a sound, a question, or a moment of action. Your child tries two beginnings and keeps the better one.
Math30 min

Adding with regrouping on paper

  1. Do an adding two-digit numbers sheet with regrouping.
  2. Your child explains one of the answers out loud.
Science20 min

Fossils tell the past

  1. Fossils show living things from long ago. Press a shell or a leaf into play dough to make a print.
  2. Write what a scientist could tell about the living thing from your print.
Social studies15 min

A directions game

  1. Write directions with north, south, east and west for someone to find a hidden object, then test them.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Frog Prince

  1. Read “The Frog Prince” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
