2nd grade, week 11, day 1
Day 51 of 180 · Science: What animals need · Social studies: My neighborhood · about 130 minutes
Reading30 min
New: ar and or
- This week: ar and or. Ar says /ar/ (garden) and or says /or/ (storm), in short words and in two-syllable words.
- Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: garden, market, sharp and storm.
- Your child finds a ar and or word in a book or on a box at home.

Writing20 min
The best pet
- Write which animal makes the best pet, with two reasons that use because.
- An opinion piece says what the writer thinks, gives two or three reasons with because, and ends by saying the opinion again.
Math30 min
Breaking a ten
- Build 52 with blocks. To take away 27 there aren't enough ones, so break a ten rod into ten ones.
- Now take away 7 ones and 2 tens: 25 are left.
- Base-ten blocks on screenteach.peabody.kids/manipulatives/base-ten

Science20 min
Food chains
- Animals get energy from food: grass is eaten by a rabbit, and the rabbit by a fox. Draw a food chain with three links.
- Make one more chain for an ocean or a pond.
Social studies15 min
A neighborhood walk
- Take a walk and list the buildings, signs and landmarks you pass.
- Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min
Read-aloud: Penguins Up Close
- Read “Penguins Up Close” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
- This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
- On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
- Penguins Up Close, read-along on screenteach.peabody.kids/read-aloud/penguins-up-close
