2nd grade homeschool plan, week 11

Bossy r: ar and or in longer words · Subtracting with regrouping · What animals need

Week 11 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: ar and or, ar says /ar/ (garden) and or says /or/ (storm), in short words and in two-syllable words. Words to read and spell: garden, market, sharp, storm, porch, thorn, carpet and forest. Sight words: “both” and “buy”. The new story is “Heron Feels Left Out”, and the reread is “Three Rocks in a Shoebox”.

Writing: An opinion with reasons. An opinion piece says what the writer thinks, gives two or three reasons with because, and ends by saying the opinion again.

Math: Subtracting with regrouping. Subtracting two-digit numbers when a ten must be broken into ones, with blocks first and then on paper.

Science: What animals need. Animals need food, water, air and a safe place to live, and they get them in different ways.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: My neighborhood. The streets, buildings and places close to home, and the signs and landmarks that help people find their way.

Read-alouds: “Penguins Up Close”, “The Otter's Rock”, “The Cat That Walked by Himself”, “The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing” and “The Monkey and the Crocodile”.

For the whole family: Watch birds, squirrels or a pet for ten minutes and list everything they do to get what they need.
