2nd grade homeschool plan, week 12

Bossy r: er, ir and ur · Measuring in inches and feet · What plants need

Week 12 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: er, ir and ur, er, ir and ur all say /er/: water, shirt, nurse. Words to read and spell: water, later, shirt, third, nurse, purple, circle and burst. Sight words: “call” and “cold”. The new story is “The Fox and the Grapes”, and the reread is “Heron Feels Left Out”.

Writing: Linking words in an opinion. Linking words (also, another reason, for example, so) connect reasons. Your child uses at least two in each opinion.

Math: Measuring in inches and feet. Measuring lengths with a ruler and a yardstick, and choosing the right unit for the job.

Science: What plants need. Plants need light, water, air and space to grow, and they make their own food from light.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Land and water on a map. Maps and globes show land and water in different colors; oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains and plains each have a symbol.

Read-alouds: “Water Uphill”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, “Stone Soup” and “The Fox and the Grapes”.

For the whole family: Plant beans in cups: give some light and water, and leave one in the dark, and watch for a week.
