2nd grade, week 12, day 1

Day 56 of 180 · Science: What plants need · Social studies: Land and water on a map · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: er, ir and ur

  1. This week: er, ir and ur. Er, ir and ur all say /er/: water, shirt, nurse.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: water, later, shirt and third.
  3. Your child finds a er, ir and ur word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Also

  1. Write your opinion on the best plant to grow at home, with two reasons joined by also.
  2. Linking words (also, another reason, for example, so) connect reasons. Your child uses at least two in each opinion.
Math30 min

Using a ruler

  1. Line up the end of a pencil with the 0 on the ruler, not the edge of the ruler, and read the inches.
  2. Measure five things to the nearest inch and write each length.
Science20 min

A fair test

  1. Plant beans in four cups: light and water, light but no water, water but no light, and neither.
  2. Write what you predict for each cup and why. Change only one thing in each cup.
Social studies15 min

Landforms on a map

  1. Find a mountain range, a river, a lake and a plain on the globe or a map.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Water Uphill

  1. Read “Water Uphill” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
