Day 60 of 180 · Science: What plants need · Social studies: Land and water on a map · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: Heron Feels Left Out

  1. Reread “Heron Feels Left Out” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “call” and “cold”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

A linked opinion

  1. Write a whole opinion paragraph about plants with at least three linking words.
  2. Linking words (also, another reason, for example, so) connect reasons. Your child uses at least two in each opinion.
Math30 min

Measuring a room

  1. Measure the length of a room in feet, laying the ruler end to end with no gaps.
  2. Then measure it in your own steps and compare the two numbers.
Science20 min

Seeds on the move

  1. Make a model seed that travels: a paper helicopter, a burr from tape and yarn, or a seed that floats.
  2. Test how far each one goes and write which way of traveling worked best.
Social studies15 min

Continents and oceans quiz

  1. Name the seven continents and five oceans from memory, then check them on the globe.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Fox and the Grapes

  1. Read “The Fox and the Grapes” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
