2nd grade, week 13, day 1

Day 61 of 180 · Science: Animal homes · Social studies: Town, state and country · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: air, are and ear

  1. This week: air, are and ear. Air (hair), are (care) and ear (bear) can all say /air/.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: hair, chair, care and share.
  3. Your child finds a air, are and ear word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Materials for a nest

  1. List the materials needed to build a model bird nest, with how many of each.
  2. A how-to lists what you need, then numbered steps with order words, and a picture for the hardest step.
Math30 min

Centimeters

  1. Use the centimeter side of a ruler, or a strip of centimeter graph paper, to measure five small things.
  2. Write each length with cm after the number.
Science20 min

Homes animals build

  1. Beavers build dams, birds weave nests and bees make hives. Pick one and find out what it is made of.
  2. Draw it and label its parts.
Social studies15 min

The parts of an address

  1. Write a pretend address for a storybook character with a street, a town, a state and a ZIP code, and talk about why mail needs each part.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Look at Ants

  1. Read “Look at Ants” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
