Reading30 min

Read: Three Rocks in a Shoebox

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: where did the story happen? How do you know?
Writing20 min

The whole story

  1. Write the whole true story with your best beginning, a middle and an ending.
  2. A strong first sentence makes a reader want more: a sound, a question, or a moment of action. Your child tries two beginnings and keeps the better one.
Math30 min

Regroup or not?

  1. Look at 52 + 34 and 58 + 34 before solving. Which one needs regrouping, and how can you tell?
  2. Sort eight sums into regroup and no regroup, then solve them.
Science20 min

Many kinds in one square

  1. Mark a square of ground one big step on each side with string, and count every kind of plant and animal in it.
  2. Do the same on a lawn or a sidewalk. Which square has more kinds of living things?
Social studies15 min

Near and far on the globe

  1. Find your country on the globe, then a place very far away and a place nearby.
  2. Your child draws a labeled picture of today's activity and writes a caption.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Tadpoles in a Jar

  1. Read “Tadpoles in a Jar” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. Afterward, ask: who was your favorite in the story, and why?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
