2nd grade, week 10, day 1

Day 46 of 180 · Science: Living and nonliving · Social studies: Near and far · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: drop the e

  1. This week: drop the e. When a word ends in silent e, drop the e before -ing or -ed: make, making; smile, smiled.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: making, baking, smiled and hoped.
  3. Your child finds a drop the e word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Three beginnings

  1. Write three different first sentences for a true story about a living thing you found outside.
  2. A strong first sentence makes a reader want more: a sound, a question, or a moment of action. Your child tries two beginnings and keeps the better one.
Math30 min

Trading ten ones

  1. Build 38 + 25 with base-ten blocks. The ones make 13: trade ten of them for a ten rod.
  2. Count the tens and ones you have now: 6 tens and 3 ones is 63.
Science20 min

Living, once living, never living

  1. Sort twenty things from the house and yard into living, once living (a leaf, a wooden spoon) and never living (a rock, a coin).
  2. Write the rule you used for each group.
Social studies15 min

North, south, east and west

  1. The sun rises in the east. Find east in the morning, then make signs for north, south, east and west and put them up in your room.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Dinosaurs Are Still Here

  1. Read “Dinosaurs Are Still Here” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
