2nd grade homeschool plan, week 9

Review: long vowels and endings · Story problems and review · Maps of my world

Week 9 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: a review week (long vowels and endings). Every sound so far, writing words by their sounds, and the sight words “around” and “because”. The new story is “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse”, and the reread is “Why Do Leaves Change Color?”.

Writing: Directions someone can follow. Directions name each turn and landmark in order. A grown-up follows your child's directions exactly; where they get lost, add a step.

Math: Story problems and review. Story problems with adding and subtracting within 100, one and two steps, and a review of the quarter.

Social studies: Maps of my world. A map is a drawing of a place from above, from a bedroom to a neighborhood to the whole Earth.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Rocks. Rocks come in many colors, sizes and textures; children collect, sort, scratch and wash them like geologists.

Read-alouds: “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse”, “The Boxcar Children”, “The Run to Nome”, “A Day on the Space Station” and “Little Red Riding Hood”.

For the whole family: Draw a map of your home together, each child adding a room.
