Reading30 min

Read: The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: who was in the story, and what happened?
Writing20 min

Across the country

  1. Write which states you would cross to get from your state to an ocean.
  2. Directions name each turn and landmark in order. A grown-up follows your child's directions exactly; where they get lost, add a step.

  2. Mark any that need more practice next quarter.
Science15 min

Rocks we use

  1. Find rocks and stone used in your town, like gravel, walls, paths and counters.
  2. Your child writes two facts they found out and one question still left.
Social studies20 min

The United States

  1. Find your state, the oceans on each side of the country, and the countries to the north and south.
  2. Name the state farthest from yours.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: A Day on the Space Station

  1. Read “A Day on the Space Station” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
