2nd grade, week 9, day 3

Day 43 of 180 · Social studies: Maps of my world · Science: Rocks · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Review words in sentences

  1. Read these review words, then use each in a sentence out loud: float, new, hopped, snow, blue and hopping.
  2. Mix them up: point to a word at random and see if your child can read it.
  3. New sight words: “around” and “because”. These are read by sight, not sounded out. Write each on a card and read the cards every day this week.
Writing20 min

A walk to measure

  1. Write directions for the walk you measured, with the number of steps.
  2. Directions name each turn and landmark in order. A grown-up follows your child's directions exactly; where they get lost, add a step.
Math30 min

Two steps

  1. Solve: 30 birds, 12 fly away, then 9 more land. How many now?
  2. Make up one two-step problem for a grown-up.
Science15 min

Heavy for its size

  1. Compare two rocks of about the same size. Which feels heavier? Weigh them on a kitchen scale if you have one.
  2. Your child writes a guess about why it happened, and how they could test the guess.
Social studies20 min

Map scale

  1. On a map, a small length stands for a big real distance. Measure a short walk in steps, then draw it with 1 inch for 10 steps.
  2. Check your map by walking it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Run to Nome

  1. Read “The Run to Nome” aloud. Give the characters different voices; it helps a young listener follow who is talking.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
