Day 41 of 180 · Social studies: Maps of my world · Science: Rocks · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Review: read the words

  1. Read these words from the last few weeks: float, new, hopped, snow, blue, hopping, stove, cube and stopped.
  2. Sort them by their spelling pattern, then read each group again.
  3. Any word that is slow goes on a card to read every day this week.
Writing20 min

Map of my room

  1. Write directions from the door of your room to your bed, using north, south, east or west.
  2. Directions name each turn and landmark in order. A grown-up follows your child's directions exactly; where they get lost, add a step.
Math30 min

What is the question

  1. Read a story problem and underline the question before solving. Is it adding or subtracting?
  2. Solve three more problems this way.
Science15 min

Rock properties

  1. Collect six rocks and describe each one by color, texture, hardness and whether it has layers or sparkles.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

A map key and compass rose

  1. Look at a map with a key and a compass rose. Find north, south, east and west.
  2. Draw a map of your room with a key and a compass rose.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

  1. Read “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
