Day 40 of 180 · Science: Fall changes · Social studies: Caring for shared places · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: The Moon's Night Off

  1. Reread “The Moon's Night Off” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “your” and “always”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

My favorite fall day

  1. Write a true story about your favorite fall day.
  2. A true story tells what happened in order and how the writer felt. Your child includes a feeling and why they felt it.
Math30 min

Subtraction stories

  1. Tell two take-away stories and one how-many-more story, like 52 stickers and 18 given away.
  2. Your child writes the number sentence for each.
Science20 min

A fall data walk

  1. On a walk, count signs of fall: colored leaves, seeds, birds flying in groups.
  2. Make a tally chart and write the biggest number.
Social studies15 min

A better park

  1. Write a letter to an imaginary town leader suggesting one way to improve a park.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs

  1. Read “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
