2nd grade homeschool plan, week 18

Review: bossy r and the other vowel sounds · Money story problems · Community helpers

Week 18 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: a review week (bossy r and the other vowel sounds). Every sound so far, writing words by their sounds, and the sight words “off” and “pull”. The new story is “The Hen Parade”, and the reread is “Muskrat Is Grumpy”.

Writing: Checking a whole piece. Your child rereads with a checklist: capitals, end marks, spelling patterns we know, and does every sentence make sense.

Math: Money story problems. Solving story problems with coins and bills: how much in all, how much more, and change from a dollar.

Social studies: Community helpers. The people whose jobs help a town run, from the mail carrier to the nurse to the bus driver.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Magnets. Magnets pull on some metals and not on other things, and two magnets can pull together or push apart.

Read-alouds: “The Stamp of the North Wind”, “The Night Bus”, “Mavis and the Greedy Mayor”, “The Little Blue Engine” and “The Squeaky Gate”.

For the whole family: Each child picks a helper they see this week and acts out their job for the others to guess.
