Review words in sentences

1. Read these review words, then use each in a sentence out loud: cloud, noise, saw, sound, point and draw.
2. Mix them up: point to a word at random and see if your child can read it.
3. New sight words: “off” and “pull”. These are read by sight, not sounded out. Write each on a card and read the cards every day this week.

1. Read a piece from this quarter aloud and fix any sentence that doesn't make sense.
2. Your child rereads with a checklist: capitals, end marks, spelling patterns we know, and does every sentence make sense.

Through things

1. Test whether a magnet can pull a paper clip through paper, cardboard, cloth and water, and record each result.
2. Your child writes a guess about why it happened, and how they could test the guess.

From farm to table

1. Trace a loaf of bread back: store, truck, bakery, mill, farm. Who are the helpers at each step?
2. Draw the steps as a chain, with a job at each link.

1. Read “Mavis and the Greedy Mayor” aloud. Give the characters different voices; it helps a young listener follow who is talking.
2. Afterward, ask your child to tell the story back to you: first, next, last.
