Reading30 min

Review: read the words

  1. Read these words from the last few weeks: cloud, noise, saw, sound, point, draw, mouth, voice and claw.
  2. Sort them by their spelling pattern, then read each group again.
  3. Any word that is slow goes on a card to read every day this week.
Writing20 min

Capitals and end marks

  1. Write a paragraph about a community helper, then check every capital and end mark.
  2. Your child rereads with a checklist: capitals, end marks, spelling patterns we know, and does every sentence make sense.
Math30 min

How much in all?

  1. A pencil costs 35¢ and an eraser costs 25¢. How much for both?
  2. Solve two more like it with coins.
Science15 min

The magnet test

  1. Test fifteen objects with a magnet and record in a chart which ones it pulls.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

Goods and services

  1. Goods are things people make or grow, and services are work people do for others. List ten of each in your town.
  2. Circle the ones your family used this week.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Stamp of the North Wind

  1. Read “The Stamp of the North Wind” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
