2nd grade homeschool plan, week 17
aw, au and all · Coins and dollars · Animals in winter
Week 17 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: aw, au and all, aw (saw) and au (sauce) say /aw/, and all says /awl/ (ball). Words to read and spell: saw, draw, claw, haul, sauce, launch, ball and small. Sight words: “made” and “many”. The new story is “Muskrat Is Grumpy”, and the reread is “Why Does Ice Float?”.
Writing: Retelling with the main events. A retelling keeps the main events in order and leaves out small details. Your child retells a story in five sentences.
Math: Coins and dollars. Counting coins and dollar bills, writing amounts with ¢ and $, and making the same amount two ways.
Science: Animals in winter. Some animals sleep through winter, some travel to warmer places, and some grow thick coats and stay.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Where food comes from. Food grows on farms, near and far, and travels by truck, train, ship and plane to the store.
Read-alouds: “Penguins Up Close”, “The Ant and the Grasshopper”, “Muskrat Is Grumpy”, “Snow White” and “Heron Feels Left Out”.
For the whole family: Make a chart of animals that sleep, leave or stay through winter, with a picture of each.
