2nd grade homeschool plan, week 16
oi and oy · Morning and afternoon · Snow and ice
Week 16 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: oi and oy, oi in the middle (noise) and oy at the end of a syllable (royal) both say /oy/. Words to read and spell: noise, point, voice, spoil, royal, oyster, annoy and destroy. Sight words: “goes” and “green”. The new story is “Why Does Ice Float?”, and the reread is “The First Flight”.
Writing: Describing a character. Your child describes a character from a read-aloud: how they look, what they do, and what that shows about them.
Math: Morning and afternoon. a.m. and p.m., how long things take, and reading a simple schedule.
Science: Snow and ice. Cold turns water to ice and warmth turns it back, and winter weather changes what people and animals do.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Trading and sharing. Before money, and still today, people trade one thing for another; trading is fair when both sides agree.
Read-alouds: “Why Does Ice Float?”, “The Frog That Freezes”, “Pooh and Piglet Go Hunting”, “The Run to Nome” and “The Bear Who Could Not Sleep”.
For the whole family: Freeze water in different containers, then race to melt the shapes in different places.
