2nd grade homeschool plan, week 19

Soft c and soft g · Adding three-digit numbers · Needs and wants

Week 19 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: soft c and g, before e, i or y, c usually says /s/ (city) and g often says /j/ (gem). Words to read and spell: city, circle, face, race, gem, giant, page and huge. Sight words: “about” and “better”. The new story is “The Ant and the Grasshopper”, and the reread is “The Hen Parade”.

Writing: Facts in my own words. Your child reads a short passage, closes it, and writes three facts from memory in their own words.

Math: Adding three-digit numbers. Adding hundreds, tens and ones, with base-ten blocks and then on paper, regrouping when needed.

Social studies: Needs and wants. Needs are things we must have to live, wants are things we would like, and people work to pay for both.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Mixing and dissolving. Some things disappear into water, like sugar and salt, and some do not, like sand; mixing colors makes new ones.

Read-alouds: “The Fisherman and His Wife”, “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs”, “Rumpelstiltskin”, “Puss in Boots” and “The Emperor's New Clothes”.

For the whole family: Cut pictures from an old catalog and sort them into needs and wants on two sheets.
