2nd grade homeschool plan, week 34

y to i before -er and -est · Number patterns · Wind and air

Week 34 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: y to i, when a word ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i before -er or -est: happy, happier, happiest. Words to read and spell: happier, happiest, funnier, busiest, easier, sunnier, tinier and silliest. Sight words: “start” and “today”. The new story is “The North Wind and the Sun”, and the reread is “The Otter's Rock”.

Writing: Editing for spelling. Your child circles words they are not sure of, checks them with a grown-up, and fixes the spelling.

Math: Number patterns. Patterns in counting, on the hundreds chart, and in skip counting, and finding the rule.

Science: Wind and air. Air is all around us even though we cannot see it, and moving air is wind.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: The Statue of Liberty and other landmarks. Famous places stand for the country too: the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and landmarks near home.

Read-alouds: “The North Wind and the Sun”, “Marit and the Storm Pony”, “Mia and the Kite”, “The Stamp of the North Wind” and “A Day on the Space Station”.

For the whole family: Make paper fans or pinwheels and test how much air it takes to move different things.
