2nd grade homeschool plan, week 33

ph and gh say /f/ · Estimating · Taking care of Earth

Week 33 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: ph and gh, ph says /f/ (phone), and gh says /f/ at the end of a few words (laugh). Words to read and spell: phone, photo, graph, dolphin, alphabet, laugh, tough and enough. Sight words: “show” and “small”. The new story is “The Otter's Rock”, and the reread is “Coo Catches Gumdrop”.

Writing: Writing about a book I loved. Your child writes the title and author, what happens in a few sentences, and why someone else should read it.

Math: Estimating. Rounding to the nearest ten and hundred to guess an answer, then checking whether the real answer is close.

Science: Taking care of Earth. People change the land, water and air, and there are ways to use less, reuse and recycle.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: The bald eagle and the Liberty Bell. Symbols stand for ideas: the bald eagle stands for the country, and the Liberty Bell for freedom.

Read-alouds: “From the Sun to the Pedals”, “Bracken Keeps the Hill”, “Why Is the Ocean Salty?”, “The Dog in the Manger” and “Mavis and the Greedy Mayor”.

For the whole family: Sort a day's trash and recycling together and find one thing the family can reuse.
