2nd grade homeschool plan, week 25
Suffixes: -ful, -less and -ness · Arrays · Bones and muscles
Week 25 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: -ful, -less and -ness, -ful means full of (helpful), -less means without (fearless), -ness makes a word a thing (kindness). Words to read and spell: helpful, careful, hopeful, fearless, endless, kindness, sadness and darkness. Sight words: “grow” and “hold”. The new story is “Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin”, and the reread is “The Four Big Pages”.
Writing: A shared research project. With a grown-up, your child reads two short sources on one topic and writes what each one says.
Math: Arrays. Rows and columns: counting an array by rows, and writing it as repeated adding.
Science: Bones and muscles. Bones hold the body up and keep it safe, and muscles pull on them to move.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Clues from the past. Old photos, objects and stories are clues to how people lived before, and history is the story they tell.
Read-alouds: “Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin”, “Dinosaurs Are Still Here”, “Hum Under My Hand”, “The Elephant's Child” and “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”.
For the whole family: Feel for bones in hands, arms and legs, then do a few exercises and feel which muscles work.
