2nd grade homeschool plan, week 24

Prefixes: re-, pre-, dis- and mis- · Line plots · School, then and now

Week 24 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: re-, pre-, dis- and mis-, a prefix changes a word's meaning: re- again, pre- before, dis- not, mis- wrongly. Words to read and spell: rewrite, preheat, preview, dislike, disagree, misspell, mislead and replay. Sight words: “far” and “full”. The new story is “The Four Big Pages”, and the reread is “The Thread That Glowed”.

Writing: A report with headings. A short report has a title, two headings and a paragraph under each. Your child chooses the headings first.

Math: Line plots. Measuring several things and marking each length on a line plot to see which come up most.

Social studies: School, then and now. One-room schoolhouses, slates and chalk, and how learning has changed and stayed the same.

Science, a shorter piece each day: Worms and soil. Soil is made of tiny bits of rock and old leaves, and worms mix it and make it good for plants.

Read-alouds: “The Four Big Pages”, “Goblins on Good Behavior”, “Newt Is Nervous”, “Duck Says Sorry” and “The Elevator Plan”.

For the whole family: Play school the old way for an hour: one room, everyone together, slates or small chalkboards.
