2nd grade homeschool plan, week 23
Plurals that change: men, feet, mice · Bar graphs · Homes, then and now
Week 23 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: irregular plurals, some words change instead of adding -s: man, men; foot, feet; mouse, mice. Words to read and spell: men, women, feet, teeth, mice, geese, children and sheep. Sight words: “eight” and “fall”. The new story is “The Thread That Glowed”, and the reread is “Newt Is Nervous”.
Writing: A report: question and answer. Your child writes a question, finds three facts that answer it, and writes them as a paragraph with a topic sentence.
Math: Bar graphs. Making bar graphs with a scale, and solving put-together and compare problems from them.
Social studies: Homes, then and now. How homes were lit, heated and kept long ago, and what has changed.
Science, a shorter piece each day: Trees. Trees have roots, a trunk, branches and leaves; they give shade, homes for animals and the wood and fruit people use.
Read-alouds: “The Boxcar Children”, “The Thread That Glowed”, “The Cat That Walked by Himself”, “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse” and “Goodbye, Waffles”.
For the whole family: Spend one evening hour with the lights off and talk about how families managed before electric lights.
