Reread: Newt Is Nervous

  1. Reread “Newt Is Nervous” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “eight” and “fall”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.

Share and answer

  1. Read your report to someone and answer one question they ask you about it.
  2. Your child writes a question, finds three facts that answer it, and writes them as a paragraph with a topic sentence.
Math30 min

A weather bar graph

  1. Graph a month of weather from a calendar or a weather report: sunny, cloudy and rainy days.
  2. Write what the graph shows in one sentence.
Science15 min

How trees help

  1. Write four ways trees help people and animals, like shade, clean air, food and homes.
  2. Your child explains today's science to someone at home, then writes it down in three sentences.
Social studies20 min

A then and now poster

  1. Make a poster with two halves, a home long ago and a home today, with labels for light, heat, water and food.
  2. Write a sentence about the change that matters most to you.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Goodbye, Waffles

  1. Read “Goodbye, Waffles” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. Afterward, ask: has anything like this happened to you? How was it the same, or different?
