2nd grade, week 24, day 1

Day 116 of 180 · Social studies: School, then and now · Science: Worms and soil · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: re-, pre-, dis- and mis-

  1. This week: re-, pre-, dis- and mis-. A prefix changes a word's meaning: re- again, pre- before, dis- not, mis- wrongly.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: rewrite, preheat, preview and dislike.
  3. Your child finds a re-, pre-, dis- and mis- word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Choosing headings

  1. Choose two headings for a report about school long ago, like Tools and A School Day.
  2. A short report has a title, two headings and a paragraph under each. Your child chooses the headings first.
Math30 min

Measure ten things

  1. Measure ten pencils or crayons to the nearest inch and write each length.
  2. Which length came up the most?
Science15 min

Layers of soil

  1. Shake soil and water in a closed jar, let it sit overnight, and draw the layers that settle.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

A day at a one-room school

  1. In a one-room school, one teacher taught every grade, and children often walked miles to get there.
  2. Make a schedule for a day at a one-room school, then compare it with your own day.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Four Big Pages

  1. Read “The Four Big Pages” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
