re-, pre-, dis- and mis- in sentences

  1. Read the re-, pre-, dis- and mis- words from this week again, then read them in sentences: on the decodable page, or in three short sentences you write.
  2. New sight words: “far” and “full”. These are read by sight, not sounded out. Write each on a card and read the cards every day this week.

Under the second heading

  1. Write a paragraph of three or four sentences under your second heading.
  2. A short report has a title, two headings and a paragraph under each. Your child chooses the headings first.

  1. Measure the hand span of everyone in the family in centimeters and make a line plot.
  2. What is the longest? The shortest? The difference between them?
Science15 min

Worm jobs

  1. Watch a worm on a damp paper towel for a few minutes, then put it back. Write how worms help soil.
  2. Your child writes a guess about why it happened, and how they could test the guess.

A hornbook

  1. Some children long ago learned their letters from a hornbook: a wooden paddle holding one printed page under a thin, clear layer of horn.
  2. Make a paper hornbook with the alphabet and a short rhyme.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Newt Is Nervous

  1. Read “Newt Is Nervous” aloud. Give the characters different voices; it helps a young listener follow who is talking.
  2. Afterward, ask your child to tell the story back to you: first, next, last.
