2nd grade, week 25, day 1

Day 121 of 180 · Science: Bones and muscles · Social studies: Clues from the past · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: -ful, -less and -ness

  1. This week: -ful, -less and -ness. -ful means full of (helpful), -less means without (fearless), -ness makes a word a thing (kindness).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: helpful, careful, hopeful and fearless.
  3. Your child finds a -ful, -less and -ness word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Two sources

  1. With a grown-up, pick two sources about bones or muscles: a library book, The Body pages, or a true read-aloud.
  2. With a grown-up, your child reads two short sources on one topic and writes what each one says.
Math30 min

Rows and columns

  1. Put 12 counters in 3 rows of 4. Count them by rows: 4, 8, 12.
  2. Then count them by columns: 3, 6, 9, 12.
Science20 min

Bones by the numbers

  1. A grown-up has 206 bones, and a baby is born with more, which join together as the child grows.
  2. The longest bone is the thigh bone. Measure your own leg from hip to knee in inches.
Social studies15 min

Primary sources

  1. A primary source was made at the time something happened, like a photo, a letter or a ticket. Find three in your home.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin

  1. Read “Tavi and the Bones Under Her Skin” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
