2nd grade homeschool plan, week 2

Silent e on every vowel · Odd and even · My five senses

Week 2 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: silent e, the e at the end makes the vowel say its name: a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e. Words to read and spell: brave, shine, stone, flute, plane, smile, globe and prune. Sight words: “those” and “upon”. The new story is “Ruby and the Rainy Picnic”, and the reread is “The Moon Follows Me”.

Writing: Details that show. Details let a reader see, hear and feel. Your child adds at least two sense words or exact words (not 'nice' or 'big') to each paragraph.

Math: Odd and even. Even numbers make pairs with none left over; odd numbers have one left over. An even number is a double.

Science: My five senses. Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching are how we find out about the world, and the first tools of a scientist.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Me and my family. Families come in many sizes and shapes; children name who is in theirs, what they do together, and how they care for each other.

Read-alouds: “Hum Under My Hand”, “The Princess and the Pea”, “The Bremen Town Musicians”, “The Fox and the Crow” and “Stone Soup”.

For the whole family: Take a senses walk outside: everyone names one thing for each sense.
