2nd grade, week 2, day 4

Day 9 of 180 · Science: My five senses · Social studies: Me and my family · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Read: Ruby and the Rainy Picnic

  1. Your child reads it aloud to you, then reads one page again with expression, the way a character would say it.
  2. When your child is stuck, say the first sound and let them finish the word, rather than saying the whole word.
  3. Afterward, ask: where did the story happen? How do you know?
Writing20 min

The best material

  1. Write a paragraph about which material soaked up the most water, with details.
  2. Details let a reader see, hear and feel. Your child adds at least two sense words or exact words (not 'nice' or 'big') to each paragraph.
Math30 min

Skip count by 2s

  1. Count by 2s to 40, then from 1 by 2s: 1, 3, 5. Those are the odd numbers.
  2. Color the even numbers on a hundreds chart.
Science20 min

Best material for the job

  1. Talk about why a raincoat is made of plastic and a towel of cloth.
  2. Test which materials soak up water: paper towel, foil, cloth, plastic bag.
Social studies15 min

Families around the town

  1. Talk about how families you know are different and alike: size, where they live, what they do together.
  2. Your child draws a labeled picture of today's activity and writes a caption.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Fox and the Crow

  1. Read “The Fox and the Crow” aloud, and let your child turn the pages.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
