2nd grade, week 2, day 5

Day 10 of 180 · Science: My five senses · Social studies: Me and my family · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: The Moon Follows Me

  1. Reread “The Moon Follows Me” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “those” and “upon”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

Swap a word

  1. Reread a paragraph from this week and swap two plain words for exact ones.
  2. Details let a reader see, hear and feel. Your child adds at least two sense words or exact words (not 'nice' or 'big') to each paragraph.
Math30 min

Odd and even game

  1. Roll two dice and add. Even sum: one player gets a point; odd sum: the other.
  2. Play to 10 and talk about which came up more.
Science20 min

Senses that protect us

  1. List ways your senses keep you safe, like smelling smoke or hearing a car.
  2. Draw one and write how the sense helps.
Social studies15 min

A family interview

  1. Interview a family member with three questions you write first, and write their answers.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Stone Soup

  1. Read “Stone Soup” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
