2nd grade homeschool plan, week 1
Short vowels and blends · Facts within 20 · All about me
Week 1 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: closed syllables, a short vowel shut in by consonants, often two together: tr-i-p, st-a-m-p. Words to read and spell: trip, stamp, crust, blend, shelf, clock, drift and plump. Sight words: “their” and “these”. The new story is “The Moon Follows Me”, and the reread is “The Little Lantern”.
Writing: A paragraph about me. A paragraph has a topic sentence, three or four sentences that tell more, and an ending sentence. Your child indents the first line.
Math: Facts within 20. Adding and subtracting within 20 quickly, from memory or with a fast strategy like making ten or a double.
Social studies: All about me. Children start with themselves: their name, their family, how they have grown, and what they like.
Science, a shorter piece each day: Looking closely. Scientists notice details: looking slowly, with a magnifying glass if there is one, and drawing exactly what they see.
Read-alouds: “Priya Moves Away”, “Goodbye, Waffles”, “The Ugly Duckling”, “Dumpling Takes the Lead” and “Eeyore's Birthday”.
For the whole family: Look at baby pictures together and put everyone in the family in order from youngest to oldest.
