2nd grade, week 1, day 1

Day 1 of 180 · Social studies: All about me · Science: Looking closely · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: closed syllables

  1. This week: closed syllables. A short vowel shut in by consonants, often two together: tr-i-p, st-a-m-p.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: trip, stamp, crust and blend.
  3. Your child finds a closed syllables word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

My life so far

  1. Write a paragraph that tells three events from your timeline in order.
  2. A paragraph has a topic sentence, three or four sentences that tell more, and an ending sentence. Your child indents the first line.
Math30 min

Making ten to add

  1. 9 + 6: take 1 from the 6 to make 10, then add the 5 left: 15. Do 8 + 5 and 9 + 7 the same way.
  2. Your child explains each one aloud as they go.
Science15 min

Observe and infer

  1. Look at a footprint, a chewed leaf or a crumb trail. Write what you observe, then what you think happened.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

A timeline of my life

  1. Draw a line across a long strip of paper and mark six events from your life so far, in order, with the age at each.
  2. Your child writes a short caption under each mark.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Priya Moves Away

  1. Read “Priya Moves Away” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
