2nd grade, week 2, day 1
Day 6 of 180 · Science: My five senses · Social studies: Me and my family · about 130 minutes
Reading30 min
New: silent e
- This week: silent e. The e at the end makes the vowel say its name: a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e.
- Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: brave, shine, stone and flute.
- Your child finds a silent e word in a book or on a box at home.

Writing20 min
A detailed object
- Write a paragraph describing one object so well that someone could pick it out of a pile.
- Details let a reader see, hear and feel. Your child adds at least two sense words or exact words (not 'nice' or 'big') to each paragraph.
Math30 min
Pairs or one left
- Make groups of 8, 11 and 14 counters and put them in pairs. Which have one left over?
- Even has no partner missing; odd has one alone.
- Two-color counters on screenteach.peabody.kids/manipulatives/counters
- 2nd grade math path (peabody.kids)peabody.kids/grades/math/2nd-grade
Science20 min
Describe it like a scientist
- Pick five objects and describe each one using every sense that is safe: color, texture, sound, smell.
- Write the words in a chart, one row for each object.
Social studies15 min
A family map
- Draw your family as a web: you in the middle, the people closest to you around you, and how each one is connected.
- Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min
Read-aloud: Hum Under My Hand
- Read “Hum Under My Hand” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
- This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
- On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
- Hum Under My Hand, read-along on screenteach.peabody.kids/read-aloud/hum-under-my-hand
