2nd grade homeschool plan, week 3

Long a three ways: ai, ay, a_e · Tens and ones to 100 · Seeing and hearing

Week 3 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: ai, ay and a_e, long a is spelled ai in the middle (rain), ay at the end (tray), or a_e (cake). Words to read and spell: rain, tray, cake, paint, stay, grape, snail and clay. Sight words: “us” and “use”. The new story is “The Bear Who Could Not Sleep”, and the reread is “Ruby and the Rainy Picnic”.

Writing: Joining words: and, but, so, because. Joining words link two short sentences into one longer one. Your child joins at least two pairs of sentences in each piece.

Math: Tens and ones to 100. Two-digit numbers as tens and ones: 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones, and the place of a digit gives its value.

Science: Seeing and hearing. How eyes catch light and ears catch sound, and what happens when there is no light or no sound.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Family jobs. Everyone in a home has jobs, and working together gets them done: chores, helping, and taking turns.

Read-alouds: “Lulu the Lanternfish Lights Up”, “Why Is the Sky Blue?”, “The Little Lantern”, “The Thread That Glowed” and “The Magic Paintbrush”.

For the whole family: Make the room dark, then light a flashlight, and talk about what you can and cannot see.
