Day 15 of 180 · Science: Seeing and hearing · Social studies: Family jobs · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: Ruby and the Rainy Picnic

  1. Reread “Ruby and the Rainy Picnic” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “us” and “use”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

Join them

  1. Write four short sentences about light, then join them into two longer ones.
  2. Joining words link two short sentences into one longer one. Your child joins at least two pairs of sentences in each piece.
Math30 min

Place value check

  1. Your child says the value of each digit in 38, 85 and 60.
  2. Then makes the biggest and smallest number from the digits 4 and 7.
Science20 min

Clear, cloudy, blocked

  1. Shine a flashlight through clear plastic, wax paper and cardboard. Sort them by how much light gets through.
  2. Write which material would make the best window shade.
Social studies15 min

Job well done

  1. At the end of the week, check the chart: which jobs got done, and what would you change?
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Magic Paintbrush

  1. Read “The Magic Paintbrush” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
