Day 16 of 180 · Social studies: Rules and getting along · Science: Sorting and comparing · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: ee, ea, e and y

  1. This week: ee, ea, e and y. Long e is spelled ee (green), ea (beach), e at the end (we), or y at the end of a longer word (happy).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: green, beach, we and happy.
  3. Your child finds a ee, ea, e and y word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Rule or law

  1. Answer in full: what is the difference between a rule and a law?
  2. A full answer turns the question into the start of the sentence: "Why do we have laws? We have laws because..." Then it gives a reason and an example.
Math30 min

Ten tens make a hundred

  1. Line up ten tens to make a flat of 100. Count by tens to check.
  2. How many tens are in 300?
Science15 min

Properties

  1. A property is something you can observe, like color, size, texture or weight. Sort ten objects by one property.
  2. Your child writes what they did, what they saw, and what they think it means, in a science notebook.
Social studies20 min

Rules and laws

  1. A rule is for a home or a game; a law is for everyone in a town, state or country. Name three of each.
  2. Write why one of the laws keeps people safe.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Boy Who Cried Wolf

  1. Read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
