2nd grade homeschool plan, week 14

Week 14 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 2. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: oo and u, oo says /oo/ in spoon and a short sound in book, and u says that short sound in push and full. Words to read and spell: spoon, broom, shook, stood, pull, push, full and hood. Sight words: “fast” and “first”. The new story is “The Little Blue Engine”, and the reread is “Look at Ants”.

Writing: A how-to someone tests. A grown-up follows your child's how-to exactly; every place they get stuck needs a clearer step.

Math: Comparing lengths. Finding how much longer one thing is than another, and adding and subtracting lengths on a number line.

Science: Pushes and pulls. A push or a pull starts things moving, stops them, and changes their direction; a harder push makes a bigger change.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Shops and money. People use money to buy goods and services, and coins and bills each have a value.

Read-alouds: “The Little Blue Engine”, “Paul Bunyan and Babe”, “Tam and the Wind-Up Tractor”, “The Squeaky Gate” and “Coo Catches Gumdrop”.

For the whole family: Play a pushing game with balls of different sizes and talk about which went farthest and why.
