2nd grade, week 14, day 1

Day 66 of 180 · Science: Pushes and pulls · Social studies: Shops and money · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: oo and u

  1. This week: oo and u. Oo says /oo/ in spoon and a short sound in book, and u says that short sound in push and full.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: spoon, broom, shook and stood.
  3. Your child finds a oo and u word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

How to launch a catapult

  1. Write how to build and launch a craft stick catapult, step by step.
  2. A grown-up follows your child's how-to exactly; every place they get stuck needs a clearer step.
Math30 min

How much longer?

  1. Measure a pencil and a crayon in centimeters. How much longer is the pencil?
  2. Write it as a subtraction, like 17 − 9 = 8.
Science20 min

Strength and direction

  1. Roll a ball gently, then hard, toward a wall, and mark how far it bounces back each time.
  2. Write how the strength of the push changed the motion.
Social studies15 min

Earning money

  1. List five jobs and what each worker earns money for doing.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Little Blue Engine

  1. Read “The Little Blue Engine” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
