2nd grade, week 13, day 5

Day 65 of 180 · Science: Animal homes · Social studies: Town, state and country · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: The Fox and the Grapes

  1. Reread “The Fox and the Grapes” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “does” and “don't”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

A clean copy

  1. Copy one how-to neatly, with a title, a materials list and numbered steps.
  2. A how-to lists what you need, then numbered steps with order words, and a picture for the hardest step.
Math30 min

A metric hunt

  1. Find something about 1 centimeter long, like a fingernail, about 10 centimeters, like a crayon, and about 1 meter, like a grown-up's big step.
  2. Make a chart of what you found.
Science20 min

A habitat in a box

  1. Make a box habitat for one animal, with its food, water, shelter and space.
  2. Present it and explain how each part helps the animal.
Social studies15 min

Leaders at each level

  1. A town has a mayor, a state has a governor, and the country has a president. Talk about what each one does.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The Three Billy Goats Gruff

  1. Read “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This is an old tale, told for a long time. Afterward, ask: what did someone in the story learn?
