2nd grade homeschool plan, week 6

Long o: oa, ow, o_e and o · Comparing numbers to 1,000 · Sun and shade

Week 6 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: oa, ow, o_e and o, long o is spelled oa (float), ow (snow), o_e (stove) or o at the end (go). Words to read and spell: float, snow, stove, go, toast, glow, hope and so. Sight words: “wish” and “work”. The new story is “Why Is the Sky Blue?”, and the reread is “Mrs. Hedgehog's Umbrella”.

Writing: Explaining why. To explain, a writer tells what happened and why, using because and so. Your child writes what they saw and their best reason for it.

Math: Comparing numbers to 1,000. Comparing three-digit numbers digit by digit, from the hundreds, and writing it with >, < and =.

Science: Sun and shade. Sunlight warms the ground, water and air, and shade keeps things cooler.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Being a good friend. Kind words, listening, sharing and saying sorry: how people get along with friends and family.

Read-alouds: “From the Sun to the Pedals”, “The Elephant's Child”, “How the Camel Got His Hump”, “Odile and the Fizzy Cup” and “Why Is the Ocean Salty?”.

For the whole family: Put two cups of water out, one in the sun and one in the shade, and feel them after an hour.
