2nd grade, week 6, day 1

Day 26 of 180 · Science: Sun and shade · Social studies: Being a good friend · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: oa, ow, o_e and o

  1. This week: oa, ow, o_e and o. Long o is spelled oa (float), ow (snow), o_e (stove) or o at the end (go).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: float, snow, stove and go.
  3. Your child finds a oa, ow, o_e and o word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

Dark and light cloth

  1. Write why you think the dark cloth got hotter than the white one.
  2. To explain, a writer tells what happened and why, using because and so. Your child writes what they saw and their best reason for it.
Math30 min

Which is more

  1. Build 452 and 425 with blocks. Which is more, and how can you tell by the hundreds and tens?
  2. Compare 318 and 381 the same way.
Science20 min

Which gets hotter

  1. Put a dark cloth and a white cloth in the sun for an hour, then feel each.
  2. Write which got hotter and a guess why.
Social studies15 min

Ways to listen

  1. Practice listening: one person talks for a minute, the other repeats back the main idea.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: From the Sun to the Pedals

  1. Read “From the Sun to the Pedals” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
