2nd grade, week 5, day 5

Day 25 of 180 · Science: Weather watch · Social studies: Staying safe · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

Reread: Duck Says Sorry

  1. Reread “Duck Says Sorry” from last week. The second time is smoother and quicker: that is fluency growing.
  2. Find this week's sight words, “which” and “why”, in the book or on their cards.
  3. Let your child pick one page to read to someone else in the family.
Writing20 min

Storm safety steps

  1. Write the steps your family takes in a storm, in order.
  2. Time-order words (first, next, then, after that, finally) move a reader through events. Your child uses at least three in each piece.
Math30 min

Skip count on a number line

  1. Jump by 5s on a number line from 0 to 50, then by 10s from 0 to 100.
  2. Your child says each landing number.
Science20 min

Storm safety

  1. Talk about what to do in a thunderstorm or a big storm: go inside, stay away from windows, listen to grown-ups.
  2. Write three safety steps for your home.
Social studies15 min

A safety guide

  1. Write a short safety guide for a younger child: three rules and why each one matters.
  2. Afterward, your child writes how today's topic shows up in their own town or home.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Why Do We Have Seasons?

  1. Read “Why Do We Have Seasons?” aloud. If your child asks to hear it again, say yes: hearing a story twice is how it sticks.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
