2nd grade homeschool plan, week 5

Week 5 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 1. Five days, about 130 minutes each.

Reading: i_e, igh, y and ie, long i is spelled i_e (slide), igh (night), y at the end (sky) or ie (pie). Words to read and spell: slide, night, sky, pie, bright, tie, fly and prize. Sight words: “which” and “why”. The new story is “Mrs. Hedgehog's Umbrella”, and the reread is “Duck Says Sorry”.

Writing: Time-order words. Time-order words (first, next, then, after that, finally) move a reader through events. Your child uses at least three in each piece.

Math: Skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s. Counting by 5s, 10s and 100s to 1,000, and counting on from any number.

Science: Weather watch. Sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy and snowy: looking at the weather each day and noticing patterns.

Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Staying safe. Safety rules at home and outside, and the helpers and grown-ups a child can go to when they need help.

Read-alouds: “Marit and the Storm Pony”, “The North Wind and the Sun”, “Rain's Long Trip”, “Mrs. Hedgehog's Umbrella” and “Why Do We Have Seasons?”.

For the whole family: Keep one weather chart for the week, with a different child filling it in each day.
