2nd grade homeschool plan, week 21
-dge and -tch · Ten more, a hundred more · Land on Earth
Week 21 of 36 in 2nd grade, in quarter 3. Five days, about 130 minutes each.
Reading: -dge and -tch, after a short vowel, /j/ is spelled -dge (badge) and /ch/ is spelled -tch (catch). Words to read and spell: badge, bridge, judge, edge, catch, watch, match and kitchen. Sight words: “clean” and “done”. The new story is “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”, and the reread is “Rain's Long Trip”.
Writing: A labeled diagram. A diagram shows the parts of something. Your child draws it, labels four parts, and writes a sentence about each.
Math: Ten more, a hundred more. Adding and subtracting 10 and 100 in your head, and seeing which digit changes.
Science: Land on Earth. Mountains, hills, valleys and plains, and how wind and water slowly change the shape of the land.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Days, weeks and months. A calendar shows the seven days of the week and the twelve months of the year, and helps people plan.
Read-alouds: “Bracken Keeps the Hill”, “Three Rocks in a Shoebox”, “The Otter's Rock”, “Dinosaurs Are Still Here” and “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”.
For the whole family: Build mountains and valleys in a sandbox or a tray of soil, then pour water and watch what happens.
