Day 101 of 180 · Science: Land on Earth · Social studies: Days, weeks and months · about 130 minutes

Reading30 min

New: -dge and -tch

  1. This week: -dge and -tch. After a short vowel, /j/ is spelled -dge (badge) and /ch/ is spelled -tch (catch).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: badge, bridge, judge and edge.
  3. Your child finds a -dge and -tch word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing20 min

A hill after the rain

  1. Draw your sand hill after the water, label four parts, and write a sentence about each one.
  2. A diagram shows the parts of something. Your child draws it, labels four parts, and writes a sentence about each.
Math30 min

Ten more and ten less

  1. Say 10 more and 10 less than 345, 509 and 790. Which digit changed?
  2. Do five more without any blocks.
Science20 min

Fast and slow changes

  2. Sort ten changes into fast and slow.
Social studies15 min

Reading a calendar

  1. Find today's date on a calendar, then the date one week from today and one week ago.
  2. Afterward, your child writes two or three sentences about what they did and why it matters.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Bracken Keeps the Hill

  1. Read “Bracken Keeps the Hill” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
