1st grade homeschool plan, week 31
Contractions · Solid shapes · Sink or float
Week 31 of 36 in 1st grade, in quarter 4. Five days, about 110 minutes each.
Reading: contractions, two words pushed together, with an apostrophe where letters were left out: can not becomes can't. Words to read and spell: can't, don't, it's, I'm, isn't, we're, she's and didn't. Sight words: “its” and “made”. The new story is “Henny Penny”, and the reread is “The Tortoise and the Hare”.
Writing: Opinion about a book. Your child writes whether they liked a book, gives two reasons from the story, and ends by saying the opinion again.
Math: Solid shapes. Cubes, cones, cylinders, spheres and rectangular prisms: faces, edges and corners.
Science: Sink or float. Some things float and some sink, and the shape of a thing can change which it does.
Social studies, a shorter piece each day: Leaders and laws. Towns and the country have leaders, like a mayor, a governor and a president, and laws that keep people safe and fair.
Read-alouds: “Sink or Float?”, “Why Does Ice Float?”, “Odile and the Fizzy Cup”, “Why Is the Ocean Salty?” and “The Monkey and the Crocodile”.
For the whole family: Guess, then test, which things from the kitchen sink or float in a tub of water.
