Day 151 of 180 · Science: Sink or float · Social studies: Leaders and laws · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: contractions

  1. This week: contractions. Two words pushed together, with an apostrophe where letters were left out: can not becomes can't.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: can't, don't, it's and I'm.
  3. Your child finds a contractions word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

Did I like it?

  1. Write whether you liked this week's first read-aloud, with one reason.
  2. Your child writes whether they liked a book, gives two reasons from the story, and ends by saying the opinion again.
Math25 min

Faces, edges and corners

  1. On a box, the flat sides are faces, the lines where faces meet are edges, and the points are corners.
  2. Count the faces on a cube, a cereal box and a can.
Science20 min

Guess and test

  1. Gather ten things. Your child guesses sink or float for each, then tests it in a tub of water.
  2. Make a chart of the guesses and what really happened.
Social studies10 min

Leaders around me

  1. List leaders you know, from a parent to a coach, and what each one does.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Sink or Float?

  1. Read “Sink or Float?” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
